Treating Pilonidal Disease and Getting You Back on Your Feet

Ingrown hair follicles that occur near the buttock area can sometimes be pushed down into the skin, where they become infected and form what is known as a pilonidal cyst. These can be caused by any number of anatomical qualities and lifestyle factors and can lead to the development of painful, infected abscesses if left untreated. If you’ve been suffering from acute pilonidal disease—especially if it is recurring in nature— we recommend that you reach out to NYBG Colorectal as soon as possible. Addressing pilonidal disease as quickly as possible is the best way to avoid the development of painful anal abscesses that may require surgical treatment. What Causes Pilonidal Disease?

A pilonidal abscess typically starts out as what is known as a pilonidal cyst. This is normally found near the tailbone, in the crease between the buttocks, or near this general area, and is caused by an ingrown hair follicle that becomes infected. The body reacts to this ingrown hair as though it were a foreign substance, forming a cyst around it that will eventually grow to become abscessed if left unaddressed for long enough. Individuals are at heightened risk for the pilonidal cysts that can turn into abscesses if they fit the following criteria:

  • Male
  • Under 20 years of age
  • Obese
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Heavy amounts of body hair

The Bascom Procedure

Addressing the Root Cause

When a pilonidal disease is acute and recurring, one of the best ways to address the issue is with a technique known as the Bascom procedure. This surgery addresses the actual root cause of your pilonidal disease and will prevent it from recurring again in the future.

The Procedure

The Bascom Procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about 45 minutes to complete. Any infected and abscessed tissue will be removed from the treatment area completely, and the open wound will be carefully closed.

Surgical Technique

The “cleft” between your buttocks will then be removed using a tissue flap procedure, effectively removing the area where the problem occurs and eliminating the opportunity for future problems in the process.
